CHAP Volleyball Try Outs

We are excited to confirm what we shared with you all several weeks ago during our Volleyball Camp: We ARE moving forward with CHAP Volleyball Team Placements (i.e. Tryouts) this week-- August 3, 4, and 6... at Lansing City Arena, located at 904 Elmwood Rd, Lansing, MI 48917 --  in the strip mall across the street from the Lansing Mall & Sharp Park. :)
We invite all girls interested in playing at the high school level, to join us TODAY, Monday, August 3, from 6:30-8:30pmThen again on both Tuesday and Thursday, August 4 & 6, also from 6:30-8:30, as coaches will be seeking to have girls divided into teams by Thursday. We aren't quite sure yet whether we'll have enough girls for 2 or 3 teams at the high school level? So if your daughter wants to play this season, we hope she'll be able to join us this week so we know how many girls we have to work with and can determine the various skill levels, positions, and number of teams CHAP will have this year.  If for any reason you're NOT able to be at Team Placements this week but want to play this season, please reply right away to this email to let us know your intentions.
Girls ages 8-14 who are interested in playing on our U10 (youth), U12 (elementary), or U14 (Jr. High) teams, are invited to come on Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-7:00pm.  This will allow some overlapping time for the younger and older girls to do a short devotional together and for the older girls to even help the younger girls a bit, before they start their own practice.  Again, if your daughter is not able to join us this week, but still would like to play CHAP Volleyball this season, we need to hear from you so we can count her "in" as we form our teams...
These days and times will remain consistent throughout the rest of the month of August:
  • JV and Varsity girls will practice/ have pre-season training, 3 days a week: M, T, & Th, from 6:30-8:30pm, beginning Aug. 3, and continuing through Aug. 27.
  • Youth, Elementary, & Jr. High girls will train 2 days a week: T & Th, from 5:30-7:00pm, beginning Aug. 4, continuing through Aug. 27.
we are seeking to be respectful and responsible, keeping everyone healthy and safe while moving ahead with plans for our fall season. We will be doing the following, since we will be meeting and practicing inside:
  • Completing the attached waiver form
  • Encouraging players to stay at home if there are any signs of illness or players are at a higher risk of contracting illness
  • Implementing screening procedures upon arrival - verifying athletes are healthy with no fevers or other symptoms
  • Identifying small groups of players (teams of no more than 10) and keeping them together... i.e. "cohorting" to minimize interactions with a large number of others
  • Modifying drop off and pick up procedures  - staggered scheduling to minimize congestion
  • Implementing social distancing strategies - creating distance between players whenever possible, focusing a lot on individual skill work and drills
  • Intensifying cleaning and disinfection efforts
  • Encouraging proper hygiene and use of face coverings - We'll have plenty of soap and water and sanitizer available, and although masks are not required while playing, they are recommended as players arrive and depart.
Please print, complete, and bring the attached waiver form with a deposit of $50 (preferably a check made out to CHAP, but cash works, too! :) with you when you come to team placements this week.  That $50 holds a spot for your daughter on one of our CHAP volleyball teams this season!
Official team registration and the remainder of payment due will be done online once teams are assigned. It must be completed and submitted by no later than Thursday, August 27.
Please contact me if you have any questions!  Hopefully we'll see your girls at Lansing City Arena either tonight or tomorrow night for 'tryouts,' then continuing throughout the month for our pre-season training!

Director, CHAP Volleyball

Youth Soccer Big News

CHAP is excited to announce that the LA Dragons soccer club has agreed to take over the leadership of homeschool youth soccer in the mid-Michigan area. The LA Dragon board is very like-minded with the CHAP board through their focus on spiritual development in a competitive athletic environment. Over the years dozens of CHAP youth soccer participants have moved on to LA Dragon Junior High and High School teams, so the transition of the youth soccer program to the Dragons is a very natural fit. The Dragons leadership is excited and well-equipped to move mid-Michigan homeschool youth soccer forward in a positive direction. Special thanks to Keith Hall, Mike Potter, Matt Rottman and JT Delaney, who have played integral roles in CHAP's youth soccer program over the years. You can find out more about the Dragon program by visiting their website --

CHAP Volleyball Spring Training Cancelled

Lansing City Arena has notified us that they are going to have to close their facility until further notice due to the government's recommendations, so there will be no more CHAP Volleyball Spring Training -- at least for awhile. We will just hold all cash paid and checks written to CHAP until we figure out if we're going to be able to start up again in April.
If we are able to start again, we'll let you know as soon as we can.If we are unable to do any additional spring training this year, then we will certainly refund any payments already made...

CHAP Youth 2020 Spring Soccer Season Cancelled

Due to the ongoing concerns with the coronavirus COVID-19, the  2020 spring soccer season has been officially cancelled.   We will be updating the website in the upcoming months about opportunities in the fall.

We pray for everyone's safety and for everyone to stay healthy.

God Bless
Matt Rottman

My dear Chariots,

It's with a heavy heart that I write to let you all know I've decided to forego practice this afternoon and for the next three-four weeks, in keeping with the closure of all Holt Public School facilities (and other schools too for that matter).

I did not want to do this, and I do feel people are overreacting to the circumstances out of fear.  However, it gives me some assurance to know that every other Track team in the State of Michigan is doing the same thing for the health & safety of their team members and their extended families.

This afternoon I learned that there is now 1 confirmed case here in Ingham County, so more are sure to follow.  While the risk of infection with the COVID 19 Coronavirus is still reasonably low right now, and the risk of death to a young person is even much lower, there is a relatively higher risk to those over 70 who could contract the virus.  With their best interest in mind, and wanting to slow the spread of this virus, the Governor of MI has declared that all public school facilities must remain closed until at least April 6th.  This afternoon at 3pm it appears that President Trump will also be declaring a National State of Emergency to instigate other measures to slow the spread of the virus.

After April 6th, we'll see what happens, but I remain hopeful that our spring Track Season can be resurrected in April/May.  None of our meets have been canceled yet, as far as I know.  However, this is a very fluid situation that is still subject to change, so we'll have wait and see how it develops over the coming weeks.

In the mean time, with the hope that we'll be able to carry on after a short break, I encourage you to keep working out at home.  Perhaps, if parents feel ok about it, small groups of kids could even meet to work out together.  To that end, I will be emailing a daily workout plan to all of our team members.

I'll be praying for all of you and our team's future together, but we (CHAP Track & Field) are only one small part of something much bigger that is impacting our entire nation.  This is a time for all of us to press into the LORD for His peace and for His wisdom.

As Paul wrote to Timothy, "He has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and love and a sound mind."  1 Timothy 1:7

With much appreciation for all of you,

Coach Shoe
