Overview of 2018 CHAP Girls' Volleyball Program

Overview of 2018 CHAP Girls’ Volleyball Program:

1) U12/ELEMENTARY  – Coached by Josh Ardis (Green Team) and Josh Sawyer (White Team)

[Ages 12 & under (8 to 12 yrs old)]

GOAL: To learn fundamentals of volleyball in a recreational, family-friendly, God-honoring setting; build confidence; challenge the girls to excellence, focus on godly character development, good sportsmanship, team building, and having fun – while learning the rules of the game and basic volleyball skills. All who are interested in playing are welcome! Due to the nature of the game of volleyball, it is impossible to guarantee equal play time; however, at this level we strive to give all girls exposure to all positions on the court.

TIME COMMITMENT:

• Pre-Season Training (Aug.7-30) – 2 days a week, Tuesdays & Thursdays, 6:00-7:30pm (1.5 hours)

• Volleyball Season (Sept. 4-Oct. 20) – 2 or 3 days a week: 1 practice, 1 game (mostly T games & Th practices), with occasional games on Friday nights and a few out of town, concluding with a tournament at Aim High on Saturday, Oct. 20. (8-10 games total)

FINANCIAL COMMITMENT: $100 ($50 deposit by 8/9 plus $50 due by 8/30)

PROCESS: Most likely (if we have anywhere from 24 to 36 girls ages 8-12) we will be forming three teams of 8 to 12 girls. We will select the most skilled players to be our “U12 Travel” team, and then divide the remaining players into two equally skilled “U12 Local” teams – our elementary “Green” and elementary “White” teams. The U12 travel team will go with our older teams to some Tuesday night away games or Fri night home games when we play other homeschool programs who also have a U12 team (like Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, maybe Ann Arbor or Jackson). The travel team will also have one or two weekend tournament opportunities. The U12 local teams will play in the greater Lansing area against other Christian & charter school teams. (Schools we’re working with include Our Savior Lutheran, Windemere Park, Island City Academy, Lansing Christian, Capital City Baptist, Emanuel Lutheran, Lansing Seventh Day Adventist School, several Catholic schools, etc... We’re still working on getting this all set up.)

2) U14/JUNIOR HIGH – Coached by Kirby Perrault

[Ages 14 & under]

GOAL: To develop fundamental skills of volleyball in a family-friendly, God-honoring setting; build confidence; challenge the girls to excellence; focus on godly character development, good sportsmanship, team building, and having fun – while developing and strengthening basic volleyball skills. Due to the nature of the game of volleyball, equal play time is impossible. We realize all kids practice hard and want to play. We will strive to give all girls play time and exposure to different positions while also recognizing that some girls may have developed skill in certain positions already.

TIME COMMITMENT:

• Pre-Season Training (Aug. 7-30) – 2 days a week: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 6:00-8:00pm (2 hours)

• Volleyball Season (Sept. 4-Oct. 20) – 3 days a week: 1 practice & 2 games – Th practice, Tues & Fri games, with occasional Saturday tournaments, including one in Flint (8/25), one in Perry, one in Ft. Wayne, IN on Sept. 29-30 and one at Aim High on Saturday, Oct. 20. (10-12 games total)

FINANCIAL COMMITMENT: $175 ($50 deposit by 8/9 plus $125 due by 8/30)

OTHER:

• Max of 12 girls per team

• Half games at home, half away - Travel & play other homeschool teams within a 90 min. drive of Lansing, with a couple of weekend tournaments; play several local middle school teams, as well.

3) U16/ JUNIOR VARSITY - Coached by Sarah Rottman (Green Team) and Erica Daniels (White Team)

[Ages 16 & under]

GOAL: To strengthen fundamental skills of volleyball in a more competitive, yet God-honoring setting; build confidence; challenge the girls to excellence, focus on godly character development, good sportsmanship, and team building – while strengthening and refining basic volleyball skills. While we realize that all girls practice very hard, the nature of the game of volleyball does not allow for us to provide equal play time. We will strive for all girls to get in the game at times that would accentuate their strengths, challenge them, build their confidence, and benefit the team as a whole.

TIME COMMITMENT:

• Pre-Season Training (Aug. 6-30) – 3 days a week: M, T, & Th; 6:30-8:30pm-2 hours

• Volleyball Season (Sept. 4-Oct. 27) – 4 days a week: 2 practices (M, Th) and 2 games (T, F) (Season begins with a pre-season tri-meet on Aug. 18 & continues through the state tournament, Oct. 27 & 28; Ft. Wayne, IN Regional Tournament will be Sept. 29-30.)

FINANCIAL COMMITMENT: $250 ($50 deposit by 8/9 plus $200 due by 8/30)

OTHER:

• This year we anticipate 2 teams at the JV level: JV Green & JV White, Max of 12 girls per team... The Green team will be our most competitive team, and having the White team should allow all girls at the high school level who’d like to play CHAP volleyball to do so. They most likely will not have quite as many games as JV Green.

• Half games at home, half away - Travel & play other homeschool teams within a 90 min. drive of Lansing, plus several weekend tournaments (Approximately 12-14 games).

4) U18/ VARSITY - Coached by Paul Farhat

 [Ages 18 & under]

GOAL: To refine fundamental skills of volleyball in a competitive, yet God-honoring setting; build confidence; challenge the girls to excellence, focus on godly character development, good sportsmanship, team building, and having fun – while refining and perfecting basic volleyball skills. It is important to note that because of the nature of the game of volleyball, equal play time is impossible. However, we will strive for all girls to get in the game at times that would accentuate their strengths, challenge them, build their confidence, and benefit the team as a whole.

TIME COMMITMENT:

• Pre-Season Training (Aug. 6-30) – 3 days a week: M, T, & Th; 6:30-8:30, 2 hours each time

• Volleyball Season (Sept. 4- Oct. 29-30.)

FINANCIAL COMMITMENT: $300 ($50 deposit due by 8/9 plus $250 due by 8/30)

OTHER:

• Max of 12 girls per team

• Half games at home, half away - Travel & play other homeschool teams within a 90 min. drive of Lansing, plus 4 or 5 weekend tournaments (approximately 14-16 games)

** Girls can move up and play at a higher level if deemed appropriate, but as a general rule they wouldn't play in an age group younger than their age-mates (based on age as of Sept. 1.) NOTE: All final decisions on team assignments are at the discretion of the CHAP Coaching staff, and will be made by coaches based on ability, experience, size, and team needs-- to give each girl the best playing experience and to give our teams the best opportunity for success. However, we will certainly do our best to take into account parental preferences and other family considerations.
